UV Inspection, Inside the Component

Fluorescent penetrant and dye-trace methods work brilliantly — on surfaces you can reach with a handheld UV lamp. The moment the area of interest is inside a bore, a weld cavity, or a sealed circuit, the standard method stops working. A UV borescope carries the light source in with the camera.

Choosing the Right Borescope

What is a UV borescope used for?

A UV (ultraviolet) borescope makes fluorescent penetrant dye glow, so hairline cracks, weld defects and leaks that are invisible under white light stand out clearly. It's used in NDT, aerospace and engine crack detection. Ralcam's M608U and N508U are the UV models.

Do I need special penetrant dye, and is it included?

UV crack detection works best with a fluorescent penetrant dye applied to the surface. Check each product page for what's included; if dye isn't in the box, any standard fluorescent penetrant made for UV inspection will work.

Can a UV scope also do normal inspection?

Yes — UV models also carry white LED lighting for standard visual inspection, so you get both a normal view and UV crack detection in one tool. Switch lighting modes depending on the task.
