Choosing the Right Borescope

Which Ralcam borescope is best for car engine inspection?

For most automotive work we recommend a 2-way articulating scope with a 6.2mm probe and a semi-rigid cable — the H406B, N5 and R406S are popular with mechanics. The 6.2mm head fits standard spark-plug holes, and the semi-rigid cable holds the shape you feed into the bore. For complex multi-bend inspections, step up to the 4-way F606B.

Can I inspect cylinder walls through the spark-plug hole? What diameter fits?

Yes. A 6.2mm (or smaller 3.9–5.5mm) probe passes through a typical spark-plug hole so you can view the cylinder wall, piston crown and valves without removing the head. Articulate the tip and rotate the probe to sweep the bore. Choose a semi-rigid cable so it feeds in and holds position.

Can it withstand engine heat, oil and fuel residue?

The insertion tube and camera head are IP67-rated waterproof and oilproof, so oil, coolant and fuel residue won't harm them — just wipe the probe clean afterward. Always inspect a cooled engine; the probe is built for mechanical inspection, not sustained high heat.

Do I need 2-way or 4-way articulation for engine inspection?

2-way articulation covers most automotive diagnostics — you steer the tip in one plane and rotate the probe to reach any angle, and a probe lock holds the shot steady. Choose 4-way (joystick) when you frequently navigate tight multi-bend paths such as turbine internals or deep intake tracts.
